It’s May 17th, which is the International Day Against Homophobia. While it’s a shame a need for such day still exists in 2012, it’s good that at least some take action.

Peter Nixey: Cook something or get out of the kitchen -

peternixey:

I seem to have a lot of conversations recently with people who find themselves in the kitchen but without the means to cook anything.

As a cook myself they often ask me how to go about finding themselves a chef who can cook something for them. I ask them why they want to do that and they tell…

Foursquare Localization for Indonesia

It’s pretty cool that Foursquare is localized for Bahasa Indonesia, perhaps to compete with Koprol, a similar Indonesian clone startup that Yahoo acquired in 2010. Some thoughts on their website. Didn’t get a chance to try out the app in Bahasa, though.

  1. Looks like they’re iterating on their translations, which is awesome. Just weeks ago ago I was reading their Bahasa Indonesia About page and going, WTF?! Today’s translation feels a lot more like natural Bahasa Indonesia. I peeked under the hood and it looks like they’re using the Smartling translation management platform.

    a few weeks? months? ago:

Foursquare menjadi pemandu bagi pengalaman dunia-nyata, yang membuat pengguna dapat menandai informasi tentang loka yang ingin dikunjungi, dan memunculkan informasi relevan tentang loka terdekat lainnya.

    now:

Foursquare memudahkan kamu menjelajahi dunia nyata.

  2. Video not localized :(
Video caption urges user to check out the video to learn more about Foursquare, in Bahasa Indonesia.

  3. Video probably isn’t the best choice, anyway.
Anecdotally, including from personal experience, loading a video in Jakarta tends to be a slow, frustrating experience. For regions with slower internet speeds, images might speak better than videos.

I used to work with this guy. Then we became friends. This is probably why.

Quitting Smoking: 6 Things You Notice About the Stupid World

My co-worker just sent me this Cracked.com article. I’m so excited (and terrified) about quitting again. Third time’s a charm, right?

Here’s my favorite part, because it’s totally going to happen to me one day, on my way to work in rush hour traffic:

While I was on the highway, I smelled a whiff of smoke, my whole body seizing at the scent of it. I realized that the guy in the car in front of me was smoking. A bit drifted out of his window, shot back toward me at 60 MPH, and my withdrawal-ravaged brain almost shit itself.
