Foursquare Localization for Indonesia

It’s pretty cool that Foursquare is localized for Bahasa Indonesia, perhaps to compete with Koprol, a similar Indonesian clone startup that Yahoo acquired in 2010. Some thoughts on their website. Didn’t get a chance to try out the app in Bahasa, though.

  1. Looks like they’re iterating on their translations, which is awesome. Just weeks ago ago I was reading their Bahasa Indonesia About page and going, WTF?! Today’s translation feels a lot more like natural Bahasa Indonesia. I peeked under the hood and it looks like they’re using the Smartling translation management platform.

    a few weeks? months? ago:

    now:

Foursquare memudahkan kamu menjelajahi dunia nyata.

  2. Video not localized :(
Video caption urges user to check out the video to learn more about Foursquare, in Bahasa Indonesia.

  3. Video probably isn’t the best choice, anyway.
Anecdotally, including from personal experience, loading a video in Jakarta tends to be a slow, frustrating experience. For regions with slower internet speeds, images might speak better than videos.

20-something / F / Jakarta / SF

I'm planning to spend the next few years working and falling in love with San Francisco. One day, I will own and manage a fabulous boutique hotel in Bali. I like spicy food, raves, logic games, tattoos, and discovering new technologies before they go mainstream.
